With an eye-popping design and a slogan fit for the historic occasion, CHIEF helped Howard University enter its 150th year in style.
Since 1867, Howard University has cultivated a rich legacy of breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for young leaders from diverse backgrounds. With the 150th anniversary of its founding approaching rapidly, Howard set out to identify a captivating and all-encompassing logo and slogan to commemorate this important milestone and celebrate the achievements of a vital institution, its august alumni and its extraordinary students.
Our designers and strategists began by asking the big questions: how do we deliver a concept rooted in Howard's core brand that also feels special and unique? How can we create something that resonates with students, alumni, faculty and staff all at once? How can we make this anniversary feel like a starting point instead of a conclusion?
Following a detailed assessment and a swift but immersive research period, CHIEF presented Howard University with a series of polished logos and inspired slogans from which to choose.
AIGA 50 Competition
It wasn’t long before Howard representatives reached consensus. The finished product included the primary logo, a comprehensive visual identity direction and our original slogan, “The Time Is Always Now.” Unveiled by President Wayne A.I. Frederick during his address at Howard’s 149th Opening Convocation, our cohesive brand system is now the face of Howard’s sesquicentennial anniversary, leading the way to the next 150 years of excellence.
And not only did the client find it appealing—so did the MarCom Awards, recognizing our work with a Gold Award in the Strategic Communications Category for a Marketing/Promotion Campaign.
