Among the most prestigious think tanks in the United States, the Peterson Institute of International Economics (PIIE) delivers timely, incisive content that shapes public debate and international policy development. PIIE's research has provided vital insight for policy initiatives of global importance for over thirty years. But with a website starting to show its age, PIIE’s rich brand identity suffered from diminishing returns in the digital space. CHIEF’s mission? Create a website befitting PIIE’s status as a power player in economic research.

Focus groups implemented by CHIEF revealed that users wanted more content from PIIE fellows. We were happy to discover that a trove of engaging PIIE content existed online already—but a dense and poorly-structured website defied easy findability. CHIEF and PIIE both agreed to forge ahead with a new CMS, tailored to satisfy information-hungry users.

PIIE’s in-house web developers were working with a 15-year-old, custom ColdFusion site. To cushion the transition, CHIEF implemented a Drupal site that allowed novice and veteran users alike to manage CHIEF also built tiered user permissions to allow for increased security—and consistency—across the site.

The key to continued success for PIIE’s online presence? Social shareability. To answer the call for readily shareable content, PIIE’s new site features integrated social buttons on each page, complete with auto-populating suggested posts for each key social network. As for the question of how to bring users into the new experience, CHIEF Developers made site navigation easy by building advanced search capabilities and a strategic taxonomy system to connect the dots between related content.

From migration planning and execution to a CRM database and e-commerce solutions, CHIEF team members paved the way for a seamless transition while our developers deployed responsive and revamped layouts to bring color schemes, font, graphics and brand signals to life.
